Burgh Castle is approximately five miles from Gt. Yarmouth and situated at one end of Breydon Water at the junctions of the Rivers Yare and Waveney. From the ruins of the ancient Roman Fort of Burgh Castle (gariannonum), one can get good views across the marshes towards Reedham, Wickhampton, the Berney Arms Pump and Halvergate. .

The ruins themselves are well worth a visit. These vast walls that once protected the Roman Camp are about 9ft thick and 14 feet high. They enclose a space 640ft by 370ft. On the East wall there are 4 solid round towers. Next to the castle is the Norman church. From here there are some easy walks along the river. There was once a brick works here and traces of it can still be seen, although these are on private land. Many or the houses have bricks in the walls with ' Burgh Castle ' stamped in them |
Now the inside of the fort is covered in summer by a crop of barley, there are still views of the west side across the upper reaches of Breydon Water. In the 7th century an early Christian community was founded inside the walls. Built during the 3rd century at the time when the coasts of Britain were under attack from Saxons sailing across the north sea. |
